What Makes an Antique Clock Valuable

Makers, originality and condition - how appraisers actually think.

Maker and origin

Names like Simon Willard, Howard, Vienna regulators by respected makers, and early English longcase clocks carry real premiums. Mass-produced American shelf clocks generally do not.

Originality

Original dial, hands, glass, finish and movement matter more than perfection. A refinished case can cut value substantially.

Condition and completeness

Missing finials, replaced hands and non-original movements are the most common value killers.

Complications

Calendar work, moon phase, musical trains and unusual escapements increase interest among collectors.

Documentation

Purchase records, repair history and provenance all add confidence at sale.

Before you restore

Talk to a horologist first. Some 'improvements' permanently reduce value - we will tell you honestly when to leave a clock alone.

Not sure what you are looking at? Send a photo or call and describe the sound. Most diagnoses start with a five-minute conversation.
